Let me introduce myself. My name is Simcha-Yitzchak Lerner. I am a male Chassidic Jew in my 50s.
I started off as a programmer in the early '70s, back in the days of punch cards and FORTRAN IV on IBM 1130's and early CDC mainframes (6400, 7600, Cyber 70), RPG on Honeywell and Univac systems, and BASIC and assembler programming on PDP-8's and PDP-11's using paper (and mylar!) tape TTYs.
Over the years I've been everything from a programmer to a Systems Architect to a Chief Engineer to a Director of Development. I also have been a Professor of CIS, teaching evenings and Sundays.
Having started before there were PCs, in addition to experience on minis and mainframes I've been on every type of microcomputer from pre-CP/M up to the latest and greatest.
Some of the more interesting jobs that I've held:
* Lotus Development - Manager of Migrations (when 1-2-3 first came out, most PCs required a custom version since only Compaq was compatible with IBM's PC back then)
* Phoenix Technologies - Division Manager/Consulting Engineer. Led reverse engineering of PS/2 BIOS, VGA BIOS and designed and developed one of the first utility packages to use the '386s "virtual '86" mode
* Kurzweil AI - Manager of Development/Manager of System Architecture - Designed and developed medical dictation system combining breakthrough voice recognition and expert system technologies
Once I relocated from Massachusetts to Michigan I continued to work on leading edge projects that are proprietary technologies for several local companies. Perhaps not the glamor of working on consumer software, but still a lot of fun.
Regretfully, a series of strokes has left me disabled and I have been unable to work since late 2002. I still try to keep up with things, but it's not the same as actively working with the new technologies.
